Rural Electric Youth Tour
The Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., takes place in mid-June each year. It's a week they'll never forget, and it'll be the best week of their summer!
Lake Country Power sponsors one student to attend the Rural Electric Youth Tour each year. Our Youth Tour application contest is open to high school juniors and seniors whose parents/guardians are Lake Country Power members. More than 40 students from Minnesota attend Youth Tour. The tour has been taking place more than 50 years! When Minnesota's students reach D.C., they'll meet up with 1,700 other students.
Students on the tour learn the electric cooperative business model, American history and U.S. government. They attend educational seminars and visit with their representatives in the House and the Senate. They see historical sights in and around Washington—the U.S. Capitol, the monuments, the Smithsonian, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon and countless other places—and they get to have fun on the Potomac River boat cruise and a dance. It's a fun week!
The Rural Electric Youth Tour started in 1957. America's electric cooperatives have sponsored students on this life-changing trip every year since.
