Grand Rapids, MN – As team USA goes for the gold in the Winter Olympics, team LCP took first place to win $2,800 for Great Minds Learning Center of Grand Rapids, MN. The co-op was one of 10 businesses to sponsor a team for the Kiwanis Noon Club fundraiser.
The team of four LCP employees worked together to win a series of competitive games, based on the popular television show called Minute to Win It. Each challenge, such as “candelier,” “stack attack,” and “stick the landing,” must be successfully completed in 60 seconds or less using household items like nuts, balloons and red Solo cups.
“A big thank you to Lake Country Power for doing such a great job for us,” said Marianne Jylha, owner of Great Minds Learning Center. “This is a start-up non-profit that which began with a dream to help children in the community who are struggling with reading and spelling because of undiagnosed dyslexia.”
Lake Country Power chose to sponsor Great Minds Learning Center because it’s a fairly new nonprofit the co-op wanted to give community recognition.
“They also have a financial need,” said Angie Clafton, Lake Country Power. “On a personal note, I was blown away from the progress my two boys made in such a short amount of time to develop their reading skills by going to the center.”
One in five people are diagnosed with dyslexia, so the $2,800 will go toward the scholarship fund at Great Minds Learning Center. The center has served more than 200 individuals in seven years.
As a local electric cooperative, part of Lake Country Power’s mission is to help each local community prosper. The cooperative is committed to being an active participant in community events that benefit those who call northern Minnesota home.
The annual Minute to Win It event is organized by the Grand Rapids Kiwanis Noon Club, and seeks local businesses to sponsor a nonprofit as their benefactor.
