Grand Rapids, MN – Most students may not have an opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., this year, but at least one will be sponsored by Lake Country Power to attend the Rural Electric Youth Tour. The co-op is seeking high school juniors and seniors to apply for an opportunity to be selected as this year’s Youth Tour representative.

In addition to an application process, the student’s parents must receive electricity from Lake Country Power for students to qualify.

More than 1,700 students nationwide and 40 students in Minnesota will be sponsored by their local electric cooperative. While on tour, students meet with elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate to discuss the process of government and issues of the day, while increasing their knowledge of electric cooperatives and American history. Students from Minnesota also travel together with chaperones to explore the main attractions of Washington, D.C. 

Since 1957, the nation’s electric cooperatives have sponsored more than 40,000 high school juniors and seniors on the Rural Electric Youth Tour.

Students may apply by visiting www.lakecountrypower.coop to download the Rural Electric Youth Tour application (under “Community” go to “Youth Tour”), or call Lake Country Power at 800-421-9959, ext. 7152, to request an application.

The deadline is March 3 when applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. at Lake Country Power’s service center in Grand Rapids. The Youth Tour is scheduled for June 10 – 15, 2017.
